WHAT WE FOUND:
Finding 1: Valuation has detached from any plausible normalised earnings. CAT trades at 37x trailing earnings and roughly 30x forward consensus. Its 10 year median P/E is 18.5x (GuruFocus) to 23x (FinanceCharts). The 5 year average is 24.5x. At $855, the market is pricing a permanent structural re-rating of at least 50% above the long-run average multiple, on top of a cyclical earnings peak. Confidence: High.
Finding 2: Cat Financial is a $35 billion+ on-balance-sheet lender funding 233% debt-to-equity. Total consolidated debt hit $44.1 billion at end of 2025 (up 12.9% year over year). Cat Financial alone carries $32.8 billion in finance receivables. Past dues are low at 1.31%, but this portfolio has never been tested against a hard construction downturn while simultaneously scaling to support a data centre buildout of this magnitude. Finding 3: The data centre thesis carries a political fragility the market is underpricing. Classification: Thermometer. Caterpillar’s revenue has historically correlated with GDP at R² > 0.6 over 20-year periods. The current decorrelation (revenue growing 24% while GDP grows ~2%) is entirely attributable to the data-centre super-cycle. If data-centre investment normalises, Caterpillar reverts to thermometer status.
